RESOLVED: THAT SAME SEX MARRIAGE NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE

PHILIPPINES

From the opposition that argues that same sex marriage cannot be allowed in the
Philippines,I am going to discuss with you some points dealing with implications of same sex
marriage in the Filipino family and its social structure and the problems that will arise from the
unpreparedness of the members of the society as well as the government in case that same sex
be legalized in the country.

As majority of the Filipinos are Christians, we all know that God created Adam and Eve
which means that God meant marriage for men and women. and We know very well that we live
in a world full of judgments and discrimination and we all know that homosexuals have been
common subject of an issue and even until now, not all homosexual is brave enough to break out
from their closet as they are not yet absolutely accepted by the society and are always being
discriminated or even condemned.

Homosexuals are still fighting for the right to be recognized by the society as normal and
ordinary due to the fact that homosexuality has been considered a deviant behavior, immoral and
its lifestyle does not conform to society's standards. Majority of the people in the Philippines are
not used to the mindset of the homosexuals who are pursuing the law towards the legalization of
same-sex marriage because it is against the mores.

First, promoting same sex marriage has always been answered by the fact that is illegal
and unconstitutional mainly because it is against the family Code which provides for the
definition of marriage which “is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a
woman entered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life. It
is the foundation of the family and an inviolable social institution whose nature, consequences,
and incidents are governed by law and not subject to stipulation, except that marriage settlements
may fix the property relations during the marriage within the limits provided by the Code.”
Allowing the same sex marriage invalidates the definition provided by the law as it accepts only
those between a man and a woman.

The Constitution considers marriage as an inviolable social institution and foundation of

family life. Article II, Section 12 of the Constitution provides that “ The State recognizes the
sanctity of family life and shall protect and strengthen the family as a basic autonomous social
institution. It shall equally protect the life of the mother and the life of the unborn from
conception. The natural and primary right and duty of parents in the rearing of the youth for civic
efficiency and the development of moral character shall receive the support of the Government.”

Marriage in this country is an institution in which the community is deeply interested.

The state has surrounded it with safeguards to maintain its purity, continuity and permanence.
The security and stability of the state are largely dependent upon it. It is the interest and duty of
each and every member of the community to prevent the bringing about of a condition that
would shake its foundation and ultimately lead to its destruction.1

Kindly allow me to present my next point. Madam Speaker, advancing same sex
marriage adds to the complications and burden that the government is facing. Why? Because this
will definitely stir again the Catholic Church as majority of the Filipinos are Christian and they
are very much conservative about this issue as it is against their morals and beliefs. The Catholic
Church will find its way to prevent that to happen and the same would cause a huge uproar just
like with what happened with the RH Bill.

Just like with the abovementioned bill, another implication is that if we allow same sex
marriage, it will defeat the purpose of the family to establish family life. By legalizing same sex
marriage, couples would not be able to produce children and would resort to adoption. That
would be an advantage, somehow because many children needing love and care would receive
much but tolerating same sex marriage would affect our number of population as there would be
lesser and lesser couples that would be able to reproduce as there can be no possibility of the
birth of children between two persons of the same sex.

The Catholic Church would again be at war with the government as it is against the
teachings of the religion. It would describe the confluence of these civil rights bills as an
assault on morality. Furthermore, every child has the right to have a mother and father and
tolerating same sex would definitely affect the different aspects of a child in so many ways as

other people would not be impressed by the modern perspective of children brought up by
parents with same sex. Children need vital security from the judgmental eyes of the society
which cannot be provided by parents of the same sex as even those parents are still fighting for
that same right against discrimination.

In conclusion to my speech, l just want you to remember two salient points. One, same
sex marriage is illegal and unconstitutional. Two, same-sex unions would not advance as long as
the political sector continues to allow itself to be influenced, not just by the Church of Rome, but
also by all Christian faiths.
