Social Media and Depression

by Nicole Ann B. Estrella

Social media can be a serious threat to our mental health because it can cause depression.
In an era when modern technology takes the lead, social media community is created. Through
social media applications, we can connect to our loved ones, we can find friends and we can
express our views and opinions easily. Socmed also helps students to learn in a whole new level.
Regardless of how great this social media community is; it is still alarming to see how it increases
the risk of having depression.
In 2016 study of more than 450 teenagers, it was found that too much exposure to social
media, especially at night, investing too much emotion on it and letting ourselves out in its
different platforms- were each linked with worse sleep quality and higher levels of anxiety and
depression.
Aside from studies that can prove how social media caused depression, there are other
reasons that we should consider. Social media users can suffer from the fear of missing out,
isolation, insecurity, inferiority complex, cyberbullying, etc. These negativities can also lead to
anxiety and even worst, suicide.
In conclusion, spending most of our time in social media will not bring us any good.
Social media is really dangerous for it can cause a grave threat to our mental state. We must
prioritize our physical and mental health and avoid the toxic parts of this cyber world.

The Language of Insects

Pheromones are chemicals that animals, including insects, produce for many reasons.
Plants also produce pheromones. Studies show that flowers use pheromones
to attract bees. For many creatures, life would not be possible without pheromones.
Moths are one insect that could not survive without pheromones. Moths have poor
eyesight, and most species cannot use sound to communicate. Instead, they communicate through
pheromones. Female moths, for example, release pheromones from their legs and wings. A male
moth can identify female moth pheromones from as many as five miles away. And because the
pheromones don’t wear off for several hours, male moths have enough time to find the females
and breed.
Ants have different pheromones for different purposes. Like moths, ants use pheromones
to find each other. They also use pheromones to find food. When an ant finds food, it takes a piece
and returns to the nest. Along the way, it releases a trail of pheromones. Other ants follow
the trail to find the food. If something blocks the trail, the ants look for a new way to reach the
food. When they find the shortest way, they produce a new trail of pheromones. In this way,
pheromones help ants adapt to changes in their environment.
Other insects use trick pheromones to imitate another species. In some cases, this protects
them from becoming another insect’s meal. An interesting example is the European blue butterfly.
When the butterfly is a caterpillar, it releases a pheromone that is very similar to that of one
species of ant. When the ants find a blue butterfly caterpillar in the forest, they think that it is one
of their young. They then carry it back to their nest. There, instead of becoming a meal, the
caterpillar is fed and protected for ten months. The ants do not suspect that anything is wrong,
even when the caterpillar starts to eat their young. The caterpillar finally leaves the nest when it is
about to turn into a butterfly.
Another insect uses trick pheromones to attract its next meal. The bolas spider, a species
common in South America and Africa, releases a pheromone similar to that produced by a female
moth. The spider then waits for a male moth to arrive. Instead of finding a female,
the unsuspecting moth becomes a tasty meal for the spider.
Many biologists now believe that pheromones are the true language of insects.
Pheromones are important not only to insects but also to plants and other animals as
well. Their importance in the natural world is undeniable. Some scientists even believe that
humans, like other living creatures, use pheromones to attract members of the opposite sex. If that
turns out to be true, it might be more accurate to talk about “Love at first smell” than “Love at first
sight”.
